Five Friday Favorites 07/29/16

in Five Friday Favorites on

TGIF, right? Tell me your weekend plans! I have a fun meeting, a nice dinner, and lots of at-home kitchen and writing time planned. Yes, it’s a pretty down weekend, but I’m looking forward to that. To put it simply, it’s been a long week, and I’ll tell you all about that next week. But for now, let’s kick off the weekend on a good note by looking back at some of our favorite things from this week. Ready? Let’s do it!

What Alice Forgot

favorite what alice forgot

This is the audiobook I’m listening to right now! It’s the second Liane Moriarty book I’ve read listened to (Big Little Lies is the other), and I’m a fan. I think the story for Big Little Lies felt a little more complex, but that’s not a knock on What Alice Forgot. As I get farther into this one, I find myself wondering how I’d cope if I forgot the last 10 years of my life. Also, that brings up the question of where I’d be developmentally, since I was only 10 years old 10 years ago… but I project myself into the future when I wonder. Anyway, it’s much more thought provoking than I expected, while still being a light read, and I’d recommend it!

Friend time

I kind of said this last week, but it’s okay because my friends are lovely and I don’t see them nearly as much as I’d like. Between hiking and dinner dates, I’ve been able to hang out with some of my favorite people three times this week, and it’s totally made my heart smile.

M at Miranova

favorite scallops 2 {Seared scallops with tomato ragout and yellow pepper vinaigrette}

Ordinarily, we would have gone out for a nice dinner on my mom’s birthday. However, we were waiting on the air conditioning people to come to the house, so we held off until Friday. It also happened to be restaurant week, so we decided to head to M at Miranova. It was so, so delicious. I order scallops just about any time I can, and these were excellent – they had a perfect sear and melt-in-your-mouth center. And I want to recreate the tomato ragout and eat it all the time! It was garlicky and tangy and sweet, and basically perfect.

The Big Bang Theory

I don’t watch very many shows religiously, and this is not an exception. Instead, this is the show that comes on later in the evening when I could (should?) be watching the news or sleeping. Mostly, it’s on in the background, but it’s clever and it still draws me in. It’s a great way to end the day because it never fails to make me smile, and often laugh out loud.

Parsley

This is an unexpected favorite, since what really happened was I wanted to make a salad and realized that we had about 10 leaves of baby spinach. But I wanted a salad, and there was (surprisingly fresh) parsley left in the fridge from when I made fattoush. I figured if you can eat a ton of parsley in a fattoush, you can eat it as the base of a regular salad. Well, I was right, and it was amazing. I wish I had a picture. Anyway, now I need to make more salads that are packed with fresh herbs. Also, I need to get you a recipe for this salad because it made me so happy.

{In the mean time, you can try this salad ?}

Yep. Salads make me happy. Don’t judge.

And that’s all for me this week! Have a wonderful weekend!

Your turn:

What’s your favorite fresh herb?

Is there a dish that you’ll always order if it’s on the menu?

What are you loving this week?

Basil. I am a sucker for fresh basil. I will chop it up and put it on anything! Thus why the death of Basil III (or IV?) was so tragic….
Have an awesome weekend! I’ve got PARENTS IN TOWWWWWNNNNN

No way!!! I eat parsley as a base for salads bowls!! I thought I was the only one! I buy SO much each week at the grocery…hands down favorite fresh herb!

I LOVED “What Alice Forgot.” It made me do a lot of reflecting (pretty sure I wrote a blog post about it haha). I think it was the best one of hers…and it’ll be a movie! I’m actually not a huge fan of parsley but it’s awesome for digestion so I use it as a garnish.

Ahh that’s a movie I’ll have to see!

Fresh basil is one of my favorite herbs. I absolutely love pesto. 🙂 And I always love just looking at your salad creations. Your arrangements look just perfect.

Basil is AWESOME! Pesto makes my heart sing 😀 Thanks so much, Emily!

I don’t know why I never thought of using herbs in salads? I’m weird, I guess. Plus, all I ever want is basic, but like Susie I kill them all which is just sad and depressing..

I love basil! I want to try to maintain my own, but I’ve heard of EVERYONE killing them 🙁

Basil and Cilantro are my fav fresh herbs. Unfortunately I forgot to remind my husband to water mine while I was out of town and they’re now dead, lol. Luckily I can usually find some in the grocery store.

OMG I love cilantro more than I can say. It goes bad so quickly, but I love it 😀

That book sounds really interesting! I love Lianne Moriarty. I’ve read one of her other books, I think it was called The Last Anniversary.
This weekend I’m going to watch this documentary with a friend and I’m having brunch with some other friends 😀
    Have a lovely weekend Ellen!

I highly recommend the book (finished it this morning)!
I hope you had a great weekend, Megan!

Parsley??!!! Nooooo..it’s besties with cilantro. The things I would do to avoid either of those…

Glad you’ve got a calm(er) weekend ahead- Also, friends who you can see regularly (even after months apart) and everything falls into place = the best. Have a great one, E!

Please tell me you at least like basil!?

And I so, so, so agree about those kinds of friends. I’m fortunate to have plenty of those 🙂 Hope you had a wonderful weekend, Arman!

The first time I saw Big Bang Theory I really didn’t understand why people loved it so much…now it has definitely become one of my go to background noise shows! I’ve come to love the humor, and I love that you really don’t have to follow along with the season (or even the episode) to enjoy it!

    • EllenSlater says

      August 1, 2016 at 7:51 pm

I do love that the episodes are easy to follow on their own – and how nerdy it is 😀

I’m a fan of Liane Moriarty and What Alice Forgot didn’t disappoint! I agree that Big Little Lies was better, but this is a good read still.
This is going to sound lame but if there is a cheeseburger on the menu, I will always order it. Always 😛

I mean, cheeseburgers always sound excellent to me 😀

Ooooh those scallops look so GOOD! I love scallops–but my favorite seafood dish is crab cakes. If those are on the menu, I will always order them! Provided that they aren’t deep-fried because that’s no bueno for IBS.

My favorite herb is basil. Fresh basil leaves are amazing because they smell sweet and spicy and herbal and bitter all at the same time!

I love crab cakes! I love making them at home, especially, since I totally get the whole IBS issue 😛 And yes to basil, always. You described it perfectly – so much flavor in one little leaf!

I can’t get enough of fresh parsley at the moment either – and it’s jam packed full of nutrients and iron too! My acupuncturist is always telling me to eat heaps of parsley as it’s warming and nourishing for the blood!
